Bright nights and hot summer days at Geitvågen.
‘When summer days are here we meet up on the beach…’
For the people of Bodø ‘the beach’ often means ‘Geitvågen’. Here, a natural lagoon forms the basis for a large salt water pool boasting delightful water temperatures even when it’s not quite summer yet. Bodø’s traditional bathing- outdoor- and camping site is situated at ten kilometres from Bodø center, on the way to Kjerringøy. Tourists can spend the night here in smallcabins, rent a place for their camper or caravan or set up their tents in idyllic surroundings near the spectacular 18-holes golf courses of Salten Golfklubb. The campingsite’s address is Midnattsolveien (Midnight Sun Road). And rightly so! From the 1950s both residents and visitors of Bodø have found their way North to Geitvågen on hot summer days – to camp, bathe or hike,to see and be seen or just to sit on a mountain slope and enjoy the midnight sun or bright summer nights.
From the main road (rv 834) a natural path leads up to the communal parking lot on the right and the newly established caravan site on the left. Further down you will find the cabins, reception area and service building on the left, and on the right there are the big field and the salt water swimming pool. Here you will also find playground equipment, benches, an area to play ball games and lots of space for day tents, sunbeds and picnic plaids. On the white shell paths in the surrounding area you are bound to run into friends and smiling Bodø faces. There is a bridge across the pool leading to a more sheltered area where several fireplaces have been put in place. A built-up dam, popularly referred to as ‘muren’ (the wall), forms the end of the pool. This part with sun bathing area, outside shower and diving board has always been the youngsters’ domain and the city’s youth still arrange to ‘meet at the wall’ on hot summer days.
